Komise Zářijových slavností oznámila vítěze soutěže Patriotic & Carnival Song

Dům kultury hučel díky stovkám návštěvníků, kteří se shromáždili kvůli noci zábavy a vzrušení v soutěži Patriotic & Carnival Song.

In total, there were 17 submissions for the Patriotic Song and 11 submissions for the Carnival Song from which seven semi-finalists from each category were selected.

The competition was open to Belizean nationals living at home and abroad. The Patriotic Songs had to be new original pieces with less than five minutes duration and included lyrics that would instill patriotism and a sense of national pride. The songs had to be focused on the history of St. George’s Caye and/or Belize’s Independence.

Bea Armstrong, Alexander Evans and Herchel Armstrong of Belize City, wowed the audience with "Belize – We are Free", which garnered them 1st place in the Patriotic Song Competition. Their prize package included $3,000.00 and a trophy. Second place winner Nello Player (Kernel Parks), also of Belize City, was awarded with $2,000.00 plus a trophy for his song "Take Me Back to Belize” and Barrington Castillo of La Isla Bonita, San Pedro, captured third place with $1,000.00 and a trophy for his song "Shout Belize".

Of course, what would September Celebrations be without Carnival Songs to set off the "bramming session." Mervin Budram of the nation’s capital, Belmopan, captured first place for the Carnival Song Competition as he had the crowd screaming with his song "Jump 4 Belize". Mr. Budram was awarded $3,000.00 and a certificate for his selection. Salus Magana, of Corozal Town, brought his dance group from Corozal Community College and enthused the audience with his dancing and singing of "Belizean United". He was presented with a cheque for $2,000.00 and a certificate for second place in the competiton. "Fayaah in the Streets" garnered Capt Roby of Orange Walk District third place and $1,000.00 and a certificate.

Judges for the competition included Belizean composer/pianist Frankie Reneau; Belizean composer/vocalist, Michael Wagner; Vocalist from Barbados, Kelly Cadogan, DJ, Troy Flowers; and Gregory Solis. Dillon Jones entertained the crowd as MC for the night and Michael Wagner provided entertainment. The National Institute of Culture and History hopes to build a cadre of local Belizean carnival music that captures the essence of Belize’s carnival experience while allowing the local carnival bands to have access to high energy rhythms that the revelers can enjoy as they masquerade through the principal streets throughout the country of Belize.
